I nailed it down!

Living in South Florida we get alot of hot weather. No my car is in a lot all day with no sunshade in the windshield. I nailed down the "crayon" smell to the plastic on the dash, interior etc.

It seems when the plastic in the interior of the car heats up, it creats a "Crayon" smell.

I can't want to bring the car to New Mexico for a job I have to do for six months!.

Plastics the new era!

Thank you so much that explanation on the "crayon" smell. I have been mercilessly teased since buying my Jetta about it smelling like crayons. I always attributed it to the leather. Who knew.

Actually, the crayon smell is from this: When VW built the jetta's they sprayed a form of wax on the undercoating. Some of the wax on certain model year jetta's got on the heating element and some on part of the engine. So when you turn the car on, BAM, crayon smell. Hope this helps.

Eventually VW confessed that the crayola smell was from the asphaltic sound deadening material that they sprayed on the floor. It did not cure properly and smelled during hot weather. They bought the car back from me but they will not tell me the test results as to whether it was hazardous or not. Does anyone know? Has anyone tested it? Does anyone still have one that we can test?

Well I bet that many would love to have that crayon smell rather than the stinky socks smell when you turn on the AC.

What is wrong with crayons?

Tell those passengers to take the bus if they keep making fun of the crayons.....

Plus they may be better off taking the bus.....you never know when you may be stranded :-)

That's so funny! I had a few loaner cars in the past while my car was being all fixed up and this one beetle smelt sooo much like crayons that I would end up smelling like it. When I told my sales guy, he just laughed and was like "WHAT?!" and everyone I told there acted like I was nuts! Thanks for making me feel sane again!

Same here. Crayon smell in my 2001 Jetta TDI. We got so worked up on it that we replaced the cabin air filter, but it didn't help. Now I just kind of put up with it. I also bought a clean cotton air fragrancer from bed bath and beyound. Seems to help for about 2-3 weeks.

GARETHUSA::OMG you are so right about the A/C smell! In the summer I hate turning on the air it smells putrid! I changed the air filter in the car thinking maybe that had something to do with it, but had no luck! I'll take crayons any day over the A/C ODOR!

Did you change the air filter, or the pollen filter under the passenger side cowl? That may be why you're getting the musty smell. Either that, or you need to clean up all the dirty socks you have under the seats.

I wonder if Crayola and VW have some agreement going on? The smell reminds me of kindergarden. I always thought the kids kept leaving their crayons in the car...

Crayon smell or not, I would be more worried about the effects of these solvent vapors on my health. Nobody even brought this up before. Are you sure it is harmless? Undercoating and rustproofing chemicals contain various solvents - some even contain xylene, which is definitely bad stuff.

Adam,

The crayon smell will be the least of your worries.

- How many miles(Kms)?

- Do you have an accurate maintenance history?

- Has the car ever been wrecked?

- Any warning lights or electrical problems?

If this is your first VW, you will find many dealers are less than helpful at fixing the cars, but can ALWAYS provide an invoice for billings. VW Corporate could care less if your Jetta turned into a pile of green dust and a leprechaun danced around it during half-time at the Super Bowl.

I don't think anyone has been able to cure the crayon smell 100%. Some have tried new sound-deadener material (under the carpets) & new carpets. Some say they only got the smell after an air bag blew. Some claim the smell come from the body-cavity wax the car is dipped in (this is the goo that drips out of the doors onto the rocker panels on hot days). My 2001 wasn’t so bad, as it was garaged while not in use…kept out of the sun more than many. On the bright side, with the wax and galvanized body, the shell of the car will be looking SWEET while the engine, transmission and electronics put you to the poor house.
